Report Studio — Engineering
This page exists because you're going to stamp this. Here is every value Report Studio computes, the method behind it, and where it stops.
| What's computed | Method | Inputs | What the reviewer checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calculated — deterministic formulas | |||
| Allowable bearing pressure | Presumptive pressure from soil type and embedment, capped by the firm's own bearing table. | Site strata (AI-synthesized, engineer-reviewed), footing embedment, firm bearing table | Whether the firm's cap governed, and that presumptive pressure is appropriate for these conditions. |
| Lateral earth pressure | Ka/K0/Kp coefficients from soil friction angle. | Soil friction angle, wall or excavation condition | Which coefficient applies to the actual wall condition. |
| Flexible pavement section | AASHTO 1993 design equation solved for structural number. Reliability z-scores from Table 4.1. CBR→Mr via Mr = 1500 × CBR. Three-layer section. | Traffic, subgrade CBR, reliability inputs | The reliability level and the CBR→Mr conversion against your practice. |
| Modulus of subgrade reaction | k-value for slab-on-grade, from CBR or presumptive by soil type. | CBR or soil classification | Whether the value is CBR-derived or presumptive — the field tells you which. |
| SPT correlations | Consistency/density bands, average N. | SPT N-values | Band assignments against your field notes. |
| Screened or estimated — the engineer decides the next step | |||
| Settlement | Estimated from the soil profile and applied bearing pressure. | Site strata (AI-synthesized, engineer-reviewed), applied bearing pressure | The estimate at the recommended pressure — it moves with the pressure you allow. |
| Liquefaction screening | Screening of saturated granular layers. Not a full triggering analysis. | SPT data, groundwater depth | A flag means evaluate further, not that triggering was computed. |
| Expansive soil | Swell potential classification, PI-correlated PVR estimate, mitigation recommendation. | Atterberg limits (PI) | PVR is a PI correlation — decide whether a swell test program is warranted. |
| Deep foundation capacity | Feasibility-level estimate. | Site strata (AI-synthesized, engineer-reviewed), foundation type | Suitable for feasibility-level recommendations. |
| Classified or looked up | |||
| Seismic site class | ASCE 7 Table 20.3-1 thresholds. Will not report Class A or B from SPT data — those are shear-wave-velocity rock profiles. | SPT N-values across the exploration depth | On rock sites, the class is yours to assign — the tool declines rather than guesses. |
| OSHA soil type | Types A/B/C, governed by the least favorable soil across the site. Preliminary; the competent person classifies in the field. | Soil classifications across all borings | Which boring drove the classification — the conservative one governs. |
| Corrosion potential | Resistivity and sulfate classification. Handles analytes the lab didn't run. | Lab resistivity and sulfate results | Which analytes were actually tested versus carried as not run. |
| Risk category | I–IV from occupancy description. | Occupancy description from project documents | The occupancy was characterized correctly in the source document. |
| Frost depth | Lookup with source detail. | Project location | The cited source matches the governing jurisdiction. |
| Foundation type decision | Standard practice logic, overridable by a firm guideline — a firm guideline without a written rationale is rejected. | Stratigraphy, loads, firm guidelines | Whether a firm guideline overrode the default, and that its rationale is on record. |
| AI-assisted, engineer-reviewed | |||
| Site-wide strata and groundwater summary | The AI model synthesizes your verified per-boring data into site-wide strata and a groundwater summary. | All verified boring logs for the site | The generalized strata actually reflect each boring. This is the input the calculators run on, so review it first. |
| Stratigraphy narrative and site description | The AI model writes both from the computed strata. | Site strata | Every number in the prose matches the strata. |
Every calculator is unit tested against physical behavior and rejects bad inputs. For example, settlement increases with applied pressure and passive pressure increases with friction angle. Live values (ASCE 7 Hazard Tool, USDA Soil Data Access) are pulled at run time, not hard-coded.
Liquefaction screening flags susceptible layers; a flag means evaluate further, not that triggering was computed. Bearing pressure is a presumptive value capped by your own table. Potential vertical rise is a PI correlation, not a swell-test program. The draft labels which is which, and where it matters the call is yours. Analysis-level work (slope stability, deep foundation design, full settlement analysis) is where Report Studio is headed, and pilot firms help set the order.
